Amlodipine Induced Gingival Hyperplasia
Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. Because of its long acting effect it is being widely used as antihypertensive drug. Gingival hyperplasia is one of its side effects. The histological and clinical evidences were consistent with amlodipine-induced gingival hyperplasia. The aim of publishing this report is to draw the attention of dentists towards this adverse effect.

Drug-induced gingival hyperplasia is a serious concern both for the patient and the clinician. A 45 year-old Caucasian male patient with hypertension, who received amlodipine (10 mg/day, single dose orally) for two months, sought medical attention because of the new-onset gingival enlargement. On clinical examination a generalized and firm overgrowth of the gingival throughout the maxilla and t...

Gingival hyperplasia can occur during use of drugs such as diphenylhydantoin, cyclosporine and nifedipine. We report, three cases of gingival hyperplasia induced by amlodipine, a second generation calcium channel blocker. Exact cause of induction of thehyperplasia is not known. Individual variation in metabolism of the drug may be a factor.
متن کاملUntypical Amlodipine-Induced Gingival Hyperplasia
Amlodipine is a third generation dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that is frequently used in therapy of hypertension. Among many side effects, amlodipine has been found associated with gingival overgrowth (GO) which usually occurs within the first three months of starting therapy at a dose of 10 mg/day. However, there are very few reports on amlodipine-induced gingival overgrowth (AIGO) ...

This article has summarized observations and results of controlled laboratory and clinical studies of drug-induced gingival hyperplasia associated with phenytoin, cyclosporine, and nifedipine use. Furthermore, information regarding the pharmacologic aspects of these medications is presented. More information is needed for a greater understanding of drug-induced gingival hyperplasia. It appears ...
